Background of the Study

Obstetric fistula is a devastating condition that occurs due to prolonged and obstructed labor, often in regions with limited access to proper maternal healthcare. It typically results in a hole between the vagina and bladder or rectum, leading to incontinence and a range of other health complications. In Nigeria, obstetric fistula remains a major concern, particularly in rural areas like Kebbi State, where access to skilled healthcare providers and facilities is limited. Nurses, especially those working in maternal health care, play a critical role in preventing this condition by providing timely interventions, skilled birth assistance, and post-delivery care.

Effective prevention of obstetric fistula requires a comprehensive approach, including the promotion of antenatal care, the use of skilled birth attendants during labor, and timely referrals to higher-level healthcare facilities when complications arise. However, in Kebbi State, a significant number of women still suffer from obstetric fistula due to barriers such as poverty, cultural practices, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of nursing interventions in preventing obstetric fistula in Kebbi State, focusing on the role of nurses in maternal education, early identification of high-risk pregnancies, and ensuring access to emergency obstetric care.

Statement of the Problem

Obstetric fistula remains prevalent in Kebbi State, with many women experiencing long-term health issues and social stigma. Despite the role of nurses in maternal healthcare, the impact of nursing interventions on preventing this condition in Kebbi State has not been adequately studied. This research seeks to assess how effective nurses are in preventing obstetric fistula, including their involvement in antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and post-delivery care.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the role of nurses in preventing obstetric fistula in Kebbi State.

2. To assess the effectiveness of nursing interventions in reducing the incidence of obstetric fistula in Kebbi State.

3. To identify barriers to effective prevention and management of obstetric fistula in Kebbi State.

Research Questions

1. What role do nurses play in preventing obstetric fistula in Kebbi State?

2. How effective are nursing interventions in preventing obstetric fistula in Kebbi State?

3. What challenges hinder nurses in preventing obstetric fistula in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses in Kebbi State are effective in preventing obstetric fistula through skilled birth assistance and antenatal care.

2. Nursing interventions significantly reduce the incidence of obstetric fistula in Kebbi State.

3. Barriers such as lack of resources and inadequate training impede the effectiveness of nursing interventions in preventing obstetric fistula in Kebbi State.

Definitions of Terms

• Obstetric Fistula: A severe injury that results from prolonged, obstructed labor, causing a hole between the vagina and bladder or rectum.

• Nursing Interventions: Actions taken by nurses to prevent, manage, or treat health conditions, such as education, counseling, and clinical procedures.
